Scientists have found that vitamin D is essential for fighting infectious agents. The so-called light vitamin, which can be obtained from food or produced directly in the body by exposure to sunlight, plays a key role in strengthening the immune system. In particular, it enhances T-
lymphocytes, which detect and destroy foreign bacteria and viruses.
Scientists from the University of Copenhagen have found that vitamin D is essential for the formation of the immune system, and that without enough of this vitamin, T cells will not be able to fight off the threat. Vitamin D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_D activates these cells, and as a result of its absence, they remain unused. The newly elucidated role of this vitamin in the case of immunity was a major scientific breakthrough.
The results of the study are published in Nature Immunology.
